The Alton Telegraph version of the canal bridge project

Last night the Alton Telegraph finally put up the article regarding the canal bridge project (front page top story in today’s newspaper for good measure).  From the way the article appears to be written, it appears that IDOT does not even want to do anything with the river bridge in the long run.  The canal bridge project won’t solve the bottlenecks or fix the other safety-related problems on the corridor between Lilac to Route 111.  In fact, this project will only add to the problems especially in the short term.  Within a few days after the preliminary work started in November, there has been a serious accident in between the bridges, not to mention last month’s weekend closures had incidents occur both weekends.  The bulk of the problems are in the eastbound lanes, which now has the speed limit reduced to 45 MPH for the work zone.
