Potentially icy weekend

Posted: 2013/01/23 in Weather

The weather forecast for Thursday night into Friday morning is calling for light wintery mix.  Projected timeline is 23:00 Thursday to 06:00 Friday of the precipitation.  Expect a very dicey Friday morning commute and plan on additional time.  Regardless of what type of precipitation falls, it does not take a lot of it to cause problems and earlier this week some big problems happened in Ohio from very light wintery precipitation (hint: the big 86-car one happened on a section of interstate with 2 lanes in each direction).

Everyone knows that this section of 270 is just 2 lanes in each direction.  After what just happened in Ohio, there is a reason why there is a level of concern.  History with past freezing rain events on this corridor have not been good at all.  Please slow down when this stuff happens.

NOTE: Editor of this site is currently working nights and will only get to check twitter when on breaks.  If you don’t see any tweets on the @chainofrocks270 feed should things go wrong, please check the feeds of @sjdayley and @y98lance.  Other reliable twitter feeds include but not limited to @StLouisTraffic, @stormhighway, @AngWxGirl, @DaveKeiser,  @NWSStLouis, and @Brpkelly.  Please keep in mind that the IDOT live feed cameras are currently down at this time.

UPDATE 1/24/13 at 17:47:  More winter precipitation is on tap for Sunday.  The storm will start out as freezing rain but will change over to liquid rain as a warm front moves in the area.
