Canal Bridge inspections begin April 28

Posted: 2014/04/22 in construction, IDOT, safety

IDOT announced yesterday that the canal bridge inspections will begin on April 28 weather permitting with this schedule:

  • April 28, 29, and May 2: westbound left lane closed 09:00 to 20:00
  • April 30 and May 1: westbound right lane closed 09:00 to 20:00
  • May 5, 6, and 9: eastbound left lane closed 05:30 to 15:00
  • May 7 and 8:  eastbound right lane closed 05:30 to 15:00

Motorists need to pay extra attention and drive safely.  The 45 MPH construction zone speed limit will be enforced by the police agencies.  The canal bridge inspections caused 3 major incidents last year, and nobody wants to see a repeat of that trend this year.

Just remember, the incidents last year drew media attention, and the canal bridge inspections this year will draw a lot of media attention (especially during morning news).

Just two months ago, one of the victims came forward with this Facebook post regarding of one of the incidents that happened last year.

For potential alternate routes, please keep in mind that 2 lanes are now shut down on 255 between 270 and Horseshoe Lake Road for an construction project that will last through this Fall, and there are off-peak lane closures on the Clark Bridge as well.  In addition, IDOT is shutting down the EB 270 to SB 255 ramp from April 28 through May 1 for work relating with that 255 project (hint: take 111 SOUTH to Horseshoe Lake Road or 55/70 to bypass that 255 mess).
